Don’t ever be bipolar and have to stop your medication because you have no way to get more. Luckily I was able to get an appt with a county health person or whatever. But this is weeks after taking it slow, stopping the meds. Now I’m out, nothing left to take. No major disasters have occured, just the unstable, uncensored, inconsolable person I’ve always been but now I’m on full blast. I cant keep track of thoughts or words, which I thought was from the medications but I’m thinking it might just be me. I’m crying 3-5 times a day. Wondering if my thoughts and perceptions are real, or is my batshit ass just twisting everything around me.

All while trying to open an abortion clinic in a terrorist filled town that I try to like but I don’t even think Jesus would like.

Two years ago, South Dakota legislators passed a new law designed to deter women from seeking abortions. Under the law, a woman must consult with her doctor, then visit an anti-abortion “crisis pregnancy center,” and then wait 72 hours before she can actually have an abortion. Now legislators want to raise the barrier to accessing an abortion even higher by disqualifying weekends and holidays from the waiting period.

House Bill 1237, sponsored by Republican Jon Hansen, would amend the waiting period rule to add the line, “No Saturday, Sunday, federal holiday, or state holiday may be included or counted in the calculation of the seventy-two hour minimum time period between the initial physician consultation and assessment and the time of the scheduled abortion procedure.” It has 14 co-sponsors in the house and five in the state senate.

Apparently South Dakota lawmakers believe that a woman will be unable to contemplate her abortion adequately unless she’s doing it on a weekday.

If the bill passes, it would mean a woman who goes in for her initial consultation for an abortion on a Wednesday actually has to wait five days before she can have the abortion (Or six, if she happens to come in before a long weekend.) This is no small barrier for many women, especially in South Dakota. The state has just one abortion clinic, in Sioux Falls, and a doctor that flies in from out of state to provide services. Women drive up to six hours each direction to reach that clinic. The state also requires the doctor to read patients a prescribed script claiming that abortion will put them at an increased risk of suicide (a claim not backed by medical evidence).

Incomprehensible and totally unacceptable. I’d love to see statistics on how many pregnant people actually decide against the abortion after 24-72 hours. Most stories I’ve heard went like this: “They told me I had to wait to schedule my abortion, so I waited, then i scheduled it, then I had it.”

Anthology is looking for women of color from the Midwestern US to write for an upcoming publication of essays. The goal of this project is to publish the voices and experiences of women of color out of the Midwest around sexual health, reproductive justice, and abortion.

With abortion rights constantly being challenged throughout the United States, the voices and contributions of women of color are rarely heard or acknowledged in this dialogue. These voices deserve to be heard and respected in the larger pro-choice movement. As these are valid issues that impact our lives, women of color will continue to fight for autonomy and justice.

All proceeds from this publication will benefit the Chicago Abortion Fund in assisting low-income women of color in obtaining abortion access. This anthology will be published in honor of the Chicago Abortion Fund’s 30th Year Anniversary in 2014. This anthology will be edited by Gaylon Alcaraz and J. Bates.

Submission Guidelines:

• Authors must be women of color currently living in or originally from the Midwestern United States (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin).

• Non-fiction essays.

• 1,000 words or less. Let us know if you need more space.

• The work you submit must be your own original writing. We will not accept the work of others or works that have been previously published in other books/magazines/etc.

• An e-mail address must accompany all work so that we may get in touch with you.

• By submitting your work, you give us your permission to publish your writing both on-line and in print.

• Please include a brief biography (100 words or less) with your writing.

• Pick any of these topics: sexual health, reproductive justice, abortion, pro-choice ideas, pro-choice movement, reproductive rights.

Deadline for submissions: March 31st, 2013.
